SENT explores military energy efficiency in France

NATO's Smart Energy Team (SENT) was launched at the end of 2012 to advance energy efficiency in the military. As part of its recent field-trip, the team of experts from 7 nations visited France from February 12-13, 2014.

The aim of this trip was to gather information about existing energy efficiency strategies and programmes in France, including a list of the most important ongoing and planned projects related to energy efficiency. SENT met with representatives from Directorate of Strategic Affairs of Frence Ministry of Defence, Defence Staff (EMA), Armament Procurement Agency (DGA) and Infrastructure Defence Agency, and visited French Joint Fuel Service and participated in the showcase of operational fuel equipment. Bilateral meetings fere wollowed by SENT plenary meeting hosted by Collaboration Support Office of NATO Science and Technology Organization.

SENT also visited International Energy Agency where briefly discussed current tendencies of global energy efficiency.

Set up after the Chicago Summit in May 2012 and financed through the NATO Science for Peace and Security Programme, SENT is jointly directed by the Lithuania-based NATO Energy Security Centre of Excellence and by the Joint Environment Department of the Swedish Armed Forces. It is made up of experts from eight nations, including six Allies (Canada, Germany, Lithuania, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and the United States) and two partners (Australia and Sweden).

The Team’s overarching goal is to raise visibility on energy issues in the military, to generate cross-cutting knowledge and to steer the process of integrating 'smart energy' into NATO’s Defence Planning process.
