NATO ENERGY SECURITY Center of Excellence

„NATO Operational Energy” concept Writing Team meeting started in Vilnius

Following the proposal from NATO Supreme Allied Commander Transformation (NATO SACT) in early 2021, NATO Energy Security Centre of Excellence initiated the development of the „NATO Operational Energy” concept. This concept proposal was approved by NATO SACT’s concept in 2022 and it must be considered as a significant step along the way to fill the existing shortfall. It is important to highlight that the development of this concept is also linked with the Warfare Development Imperative “Layered Resilience” of the NATO Warfighting Capstone Concept (NWCC). It will include energy requirements for training, movement and sustainment of the military forces and weapon platforms for military operations. It will address Energy Management in its entirety (production, procurement, transportation, storage, distribution, quality control, accountability, data collection, security, protection, etc.) and provide guidance for the main principles in order to design future NATO energy standards.

A kick-off meeting is held in Vilnius, Lithuania on 5-7 of April 2022. 26 participants has arrived from different countries and entities to attend it. It will be a fundamental event to start the development of the document that must be considered as one of the most important for the future of this sector. The importance of the event was underlined by the presence of the Lithuanian vice Minister of Defense Mr. Žilvinas Tomkus.
