NATO and partners discuss Sustainable Military Compounds in an operational environment
On 3-5 June, representatives of the NATO ENSEC COE LTC Luca Dottarelli, Dr. Arunas Molis and Ms. Rasa Pazarauskiene participated in the International workshop “Sustainable Military Compounds (Towards a Zero Footprint Compound), which took place in Ottawa, Canada.
NATO ENSEC COE representatives provided the participants of the workshop with several presentations on evolution and practical aspects of military energy efficiency within NATO. The way ahead for enhancing energy efficiency for Allied troops was also actively discussed in the margins of the workshop.
The goal of this Sustainable Military Compounds project is to explore the economical and practical benefits of reducing the energy consumption, improving energy efficiencies and reducing the waste and environmental footprint of military compounds in an operational environment. The projects tends to deliver concrete product that would help to increase the knowledge base amongst practitioners thereby encouraging the innovative integration of technologies that would ultimately contribute to the goal of sustainable military compound in a rational and holistic way.
Sustainable Military Compounds initiative also aims to lay a foundation for the concrete products which would assist NATO in the achievement of a sustainable military compound and the establishment of procedures related to the camp closure of NATO compounds. Those products include Compendium of best practices on environmental protection and energy efficiency Conceptual model for the future NATO deployed camp and camp closure handbook for NATO compounds.
The Sustainable Military Compounds project comprised of four workshops in the period of 2012-2014 organized in the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and Canada. The project is supported by NATO Science for Peace and Security Programme.
