Experts from NATO and NATO partner countries discussed at conference ''Innovative Energy Solutions for Military Application'' in Vilnius, which was taking place at the Lithuanian Exhibition and Congress Centre LITEXPO, Vilnius, Lithuania (www.litexpo.lt) from 09.00 to 19.00 hours, on 12-13 November 2014, featuring high-level speeches by the NATO’s Assistant Secretary General for Emerging Security Challenges, NATO’s Chief Scientist, as well as Generals and Ambassadors of NATO member and partner countries. The exclusive government-only session on 14 November was  addressing NATO's Smart Energy strategy and opportunities for accelerating Smart Energy technologies and solutions.

NATO has been advancing its stake in energy efficiency of Allied forces. In February 2014, the North Atlantic Council agreed on a "Green Defence Framework" which highlights the Alliance’s work on “Smart Energy”. The Framework was reaffirmed by the Allied Heads of State and Government at NATO’s Wales Summit on 4 and 5 September 2014.

Through its Energy Security Section, the Alliance has created a whole range of “Smart Defence” initiatives, such as the Smart Energy Team (SENT) that advises NATO in its efforts to help lower fuel and electricity consumption in multinational Smart Energy projects.

IESMA, which previously took place in 2011, has already provided a platform for information exchange on best practices and technologies for advancing energy efficiency in the military. The 2014 version of the event is featuring conference and an industrial exhibition to discuss and showcase cutting-edge energy-saving technologies, such as micro grids, energy storages and portable power solutions.

NATO’s Science for Peace and Security (SPS) Programme is supporting the NATO Energy Security Centre of Excellence to organise an event on “Innovative Energy Solutions for Military Application” (IESMA).
